Matt Arone, Recreation Superintendent

Matt Arone

Matt Arone was hired as the Recreation Superintendent in Sleepy Hollow, in October 2017.  Arone comes to the village from his position as Deputy Superintendent in the Village of Scarsdale and brings a wealth of credentials preparing him for the job.

Arone has been a full-time municipal recreation professional for 22 years. He started it all with a Behavioral Sciences degree from Concordia College, where he also starred as a college baseball player and then earned his Master’s Degree in Counseling and Development at Long Island University. While understanding athletics is important to a recreation professional, clearly working within the community is a people challenge as well.

“The fact that Sleepy Hollow is such a unique community makes this job a fabulous opportunity. Downtown residents have different interests in programming, activities and facilities than in other parts of the village. I listen to everyone and will do my best to find the balance to meet everyone’s needs,” Arone stated.

Arone has coached basketball and baseball in various school districts around Westchester County. He is a long-time executive board member of Westchester Recreation and Park Society and currently is serving as President. He has also refereed soccer, umped baseball and currently volunteers as a youth coach for both CYO and Little League.

“I was drawn to the job in Sleepy Hollow because the future of this village is tremendously exciting. We are growing, and new parcels of land on the waterfront create interesting opportunities for great recreational programming.” Arone said. “My job is to increase recreational programming for residents of all ages and interests and to improve our parks and facilities to make them more enjoyable for everyone. We want to make the river more accessible for residents.”

Clearly for Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown residents who watch their kids compete and recreate together regularly, coordination between the towns in recreation takes on special importance. “I worked for Joe Arduino, the Tarrytown Recreation Supervisor, at one of my first jobs for the Town of Greenburgh. We have a terrific relationship and have already met several times and are already collaborating on some great ideas.”

Arone has a broad responsibility and has some level of involvement in everything from the Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony, to Senior Painting events to after school programs, to the Sleepy Hollow Chess Club. He is entirely open to and supportive of great community ideas like Lego Night on a Saturday which allowed parents a night out…that one sold out quickly.
